The poem “The Dinkey Bird” appears in Poems of Childhood by Eugene Field, which was published in 1904:

The poem is about a bird that sings in an amfalula tree, where gumdrops grow like cherries and taffy is thick as peas. The poem also describes how the bird's bravuras and staccatos delight the youth of every nation.

There is also an oil on paper and paperboard painting called The Dinkey Bird by Maxfield Parrish that illustrates the poem. Edward Bok commissioned the painting, which was later purchased by Henry Russell Sage. The painting was forgotten for decades until a grandchild of Sage discovered it.
The book this print is derived from was considered on literary par with Alice In Wonderland, A Child's Garden of Verses, and The Wizard of Oz. Maxfield Parrish gave us illustrations of the magical and carefree inner worlds of young people. This piece of art is both beautiful and important.
